Beware of public Wi-Fi
Admittedly, it’s convenient: today, in almost all airports, train stations and cafés, Wi-Fi is free. It’s an opportunity for you to check your e-mails for free, but also for hackers to retrieve some very useful private information!
Avoid, therefore, on these public networks, to connect to:
– your bank accounts;
– merchant accounts to make online purchases;
– any type of application containing sensitive data.
Good to know: your phone’s Bluetooth is also a privileged access for hackers. Be vigilant.
Encrypt your smart phone data
Android and iPhone operating systems include an option to encrypt data.
Some smart phones include the factory application, for others you need to download it. It’s simple: some data appears scrambled and unreadable. You need a code to decrypt it.
Good to know: write this code down somewhere, except in your smart phone!
Complicate access to your Smartphone
You have different possibilities to protect the access to your smart phone:
– Using an unlocking scheme and an access code.
– Use a facial recognition system.
– Use a digital recognition system.
Note: All models now have an access code system to lock a smart phone. Facial recognition systems are beginning to develop, finger recognition systems, biometrics, are only available on high-end models.
Keeping the IMEI number
IMEI stands for International Mobile Equipment Identity. This 15-digit number uniquely identifies each mobile phone.
If your mobile phone is lost or stolen, simply consult your operator and provide them with the IMEI number. The operator will then be able to completely block access to your mobile phone remotely.
The IMEI is obtained by entering the following code on your keypad: *#06#.
Note: keep the IMEI code somewhere on a remote server (storage, e-mails…). You should be able to access this number as soon as possible, and from anywhere.
In case of theft, erase your data remotely
Few people know this, but manufacturers allow you to remotely erase your data through applications:
– Built-in to the operating system.
– Third parties.
If your mobile device is lost or stolen, you can access your data on your personal account and can erase everything on your smart phone.
Note: as this operation is irreversible, take the time to search a little beforehand!
Do not let access to your cards
When making repairs or changing phones, always remember to remove:
– your SIM card;
– your memory card.
They contain sensitive data such as personal SMS messages, contact details, photos or private files. By leaving them in the phone, you run the risk that someone will take them, use them on your behalf or monitor your whereabouts.
