Cannabidiol, the lesser known and less popular component of the marijuana plant is generating interest among scientists for its medical advantages. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD has non-psychoactive agents that can be useful to treat many illnesses due to its therapeutic effects.
Marijuana (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD)
Better known as CBD, it is one of the 104 chemical compounds known as cannabinoids found in the cannabis or marijuana plant, Cannabis sativa. CBD has non-psychoactive effects, making it of no interest to marijuana smokers. Consequently, Cannabidiol is authorized for sale and people are rooting for it to shake things up in the scientific and medical field. Additionally, research has shown that cannabidiol has anxiolytic and antipsychotic reactions in people affected by schizophrenia. Scientific experiments carried on rats have shown it can eliminate certain tumors and that it has anti-inflammatory effects.
CBD’s anti-seizure properties
In 2013, Charlotte Figi, a young American girl suffering from Dravet Syndrome, was the subject of a documentary that aired on CNN. Her parents tried almost everything to stop their girl from having severe seizures every day until they discovered the video of an epileptic child being treated with cannabidiol. Watched by millions of viewers around the United States, CBD began to be viewed more as a medicine than a dangerous drug. Charlotte’s parents, new to cannabis or any other drugs, acquired Marijuana herbs that had a low concentration of THC, but high in CBD. The oil was tested first before they began administering it to Charlotte in small doses. After a few hours, they noted a drastic change as for the next seven days there were not a single seizure.
Not all patients respond in a similar manner
According to Manfred (a Swiss-based cannabis pharmacist), “not all patients respond to treatment in this way”. Eventually, after the treatment, Charlotte began acting like a normal 5-year-old again. She began talking; laughing, walking and cycling like girls of her age. CBD really had a beneficial effect on the lives of both Charlotte and her parents. It gave them their child back. After the CNN documentary, Frank Manfred’s business received a significant boost as more and more patients began contacting him around the country for their dose of CBD.
More research is needed
From neurological disorders to cancer, CBD has hidden medical values that need more research and investment to show its true potential. That is why scientists are working hard to unlock the secret of CBD in treating illnesses.
